NY HAS A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET The over whelming majority of those convicted of sex offenses are not sentenced to jail or prison. The former City Council President of Jamestown, NY plead guilty to second degree sexual conduct against a child, three counts of first degree sexual abuse and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child in May 2004. He was accused of having sexual contact with a child beginning at the age of 3 and continuing for 5 years. The sentence for this 50 year old community leader was ...! N O J A I L T I M E ! He was sentenced to 10 years of probation. According to The Post Journal June 3, 2004, the child's mother said "My daughter received a life sentence because of [the perpetrator]." This was not a unique case. In fact nearly 60% of those convicted of sexually assaulting a child in NY, including convictions for rape, are NOT sentenced to one day in jail or prison.
